Description

Master Woodcarver Julian Schmechel uses knowledge and experience from four generations to produce by hand, the most breathtaking bespoke pieces, in sumptuous, locally grown hardwoods.

Workshop participants will be taught the craft of traditional woodcarving, learning how to correctly hold and use a range of chisels and gouges alongside maintainance of tools including sharpening.

During the workshop you will also will learn different project based relief techniques starting with letters and moving on to numbers and forms such as leaves or animal heads.

This workshop is part of the Centre for Stewardship Woodland Festival, promoting WoodWorks, a project supporting young people to develop independent woodland enterprises.

Eligibility: You must be aged between 18-25.

This course runs from 10am - 4.30pm, with a break for lunch and a communal meal at the end of the day.

Please bring your own lunch each day, this can be bought at nearby café pillars of Hercules. A vegan gluten free evening meal is included as part of the course.

From 4.30pm – 5.30pm there will be a talk from a professional craftsperson that you can opt into.

Accommodation: Accommodation is included in our ‘tent village’ courtesy of Turtle Tents. Please specify on your Eventbrite booking whether you will be staying with us. Camp beds and basic cooking equipment (fire pit, utensils etc) will be provided for use within a shared tent. Please bring sleeping bag and any other camping kit you will require.

Where: Please meet us at the Pillars overflow carpark just on the left after the Pillars of Hercules, Falkland where our navigation team will direct you to Chancefield (15 minute walk through the woods). Please meet here at 9.20am so we can get to Chancefield for a 10am start. If you have limited mobility please let us know and transport to site can be arragned from our meeting point. Transport: If travelling by car please follow the signs for Pillars of Hercules (Organic Farm Shop). Nearest train stations are Ladybanck or Markinch and buses pass through Falkland. Please see http://www.pillars.co.uk/contact---travel.html or travelinescotland for more details.

Please Bring: Sturdy protective footwear. Wet weather clothing. Personal water bottle. Food or the means to buy. Camping kit if staying in the tent village.
