Event description

Description

Woodlands come in many shapes & sizes and it's not always easy to know how to manage them to get the best out of them. Also which ones to tackle first with the highest priority. Donald McPhillimy has worked with thousands of different woodlands in Scotland. He will share his knowledge of how best to go about managing woodlands with an emphasis on the early years from establishment to around 30 years old. He will discuss the theory and practice of woodland management in the morning before leading a guided walk in the woods at Plean Country Park in the afternoon. There may also be an opportunity to do some hands on pruning and thinning.

Experience Level - No experience required.

Instructor’s DetailsDonald McPhillimy - I started my forestry career building log cabins on the west coast of Argyll and have since then worked for a forestry estate, New Zealand Forest Service, Scottish Woodlands, New Caledonian Woodlands and mainly for myself. I like all kinds of forests & woods even Sitka spruce plantations. I especially like pruning, coppicing, making campfires and cooking sausages.

What to bring with youWarm outdoor clothing and good boots. A small notebook. Working gloves.
