Woodlands Community Garden Funding Masterclass (Sustaining your work)
Tuesday, 13 September 2016 from 09:30 to 16:00 (BST)
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
Over the last 6 years Woodlands Community Garden has become one of the most successful and high profile communty gardens in Scotland. We have won awards at both national and local level, and regularly featured in case studies of best practice.
Initially funded for two years by the Climate Challenge Fund, we have since diversified our funding streams, receiving funding from over 50 different funders as well as raising income from crowdfunding, business sponsorship and community donations. Our successful partnership working has enabled us to work with older people, people from ME backgrounds, people with long term addictions and those with mental/physical health problems. During this time our staff team has expanded from 2 part-time to 1 full-time and six part-time staff.
This training course will tell the story of how we grew both our community garden and community cafe, explaining how we approach fundraising and share some of our tips for successfully building and growing your own community garden and community food projects.
There will also be an opportunity to have a guided tour of our community garden. Lunch and refreshments provided.
The course will be delivered by Tim Cowen, the manager of Woodlands Community Development Trust who has overseen the Community Garden's expansion for the last 5 years. Tim is an experienced trainer with over 20 years experience of working in the voluntary sector.

When & Where
Woodlands Community Garden
Woodlands Community Development Trust is a small local charity, whose work is having a big impact. Our Community Garden supports over 50 families to grow their own food and our volunteer training programmes have helped people learn new skills, reduce their isolation and further develop the garden as a therapeutic space. Our Community Café’s inclusive approach has enabled people from diverse backgrounds to work together collaboratively and enabled us to restore a sense of community and solidarity. Woodlands Community Garden has grown more than just food, it has grown a community. It is a vibrant outdoor community centre – a wonderfully therapeutic space that helps people to recover from the stresses and strains of every day life. Linked to the garden, our community café serves up more than just food. Pioneering an alternative approach to food banks that centres around a shared meal, we have reduced the stigma of accessing food aid and this year served up over 3600 healthy meals. The food at the café is shared and in that sharing everyone is made to feel equal.
