About this event

Start point: Monk Coniston LDNPA car park (Postcodes are unreliable in rural areas. The confirmation email contains precise details of how to find this car park)

Length: 8.9 km (5.5 miles) with 250m (820 ft) of ascent

Time: 4.5 hours (approx.)

Grade: 4 (see grade description below)

The route begins with a walk to Yewdale before the ascent of Tom Gill to Tarn Hows. The return to the car park is via Monk Coniston Hall with an opportunity to visit the tree walk and restored walled kitchen garden. The entire walk is within what was once the Monk Coniston estate, which has an interesting past with connections to Beatrix Potter as well as the famous collection of trees and one of the most photographed tarns in the Lake District.

Paths are generally good but there are some sections that are uneven and others which may be muddy and slippery in poor weather. The walk also includes a steep and stony ascent of Tom Gill.

Grade 4 walks are generally full day walks that include hilly ground and require a reasonable level of fitness. You might encounter climbs up some steeper sections. The surfaces may be rough and uneven, with rocky or muddy sections, and you may also find yourself walking up irregular steps, over stiles or through narrow gates and gaps.

Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather and bring a packed lunch. Please see the main webpage for more details.

Your confirmation email will include full details - please read it carefully.
