Event description

Description

Delve into our two day course and learn how to build your very own, charismatic German Nutcracker Figure, woodturning each piece from scratch.

German Nutcracker figures have for centuries been given as presents, acting as good luck charms by scaring off bad spirits with their gnashers. This is why you find the cracker’s have strong authoritative styles such as soldiers, kings or queens. Today, Nutcrackers have become ornamental and are linked to Christmas often given as presents. The cracker mechanism (gnashers) have become more for show as they’re neither large or strong enough to crack nuts!

What you will learn

Our two day course encompasses the making of the Nutcracker figures from start to finish. Depending on which style you choose to make, it may consist of anything up to 15 pieces.

Types of Nutcracker you can make:

  • Staff holding soldier
  • Drummer soldier
  • King
  • Queen

You will cover basic turning techniques, alongside the main chisel types. With guidance throughout from your tutor you will make your Nutcracker figure, building from the feet to the crown. Following this, you will then go on to turn your Nutcracker’s instruments or weapons. As well as turning the main components, there will be the opportunity to use the router and look at a simple router box construction. You will discuss paints, airbrushing and embellishment including material selection, buttons and artificial hair. However, these tasks will need to be done at home to allow sufficient drying time.

What you will take home

  • Your Nutcracker figure
  • Certificate of attendance
  • ‘How to’ - Course details

Items you take home can change depending on the resources and materials available on the day.
