About this event

  • 7 hours

Open to anyone who has done the basic woodwork level one course with me or who already has some basic experience with saws, cordless drills and marking out. Just five places, so plenty of individual attention, and a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

FOR OVER 18'S, WOMEN AND MEN WELCOME - WHOLE DAY COURSE

ALMOST ENTIRELY HANDTOOLS

LOTS OF TOOLS, TECHNIQUES AND PROJECTS This is a whole day course so I'll pack in as many different tools and techniques as I can on a range of different projects. I'll have some new wood from the timber merchant, some reclaimed stuff and we'll also work a bit with some greenwood poles. I'm going to look out something we can fix too, so you can see some glueing/repairing techniques.

HAND TOOLS I do as much as possible with hand tools on these courses, my thinking is that it's a much more sustainable way of working, is so much more peaceful, also, if you get the hang of hand tools it gives you a much better understanding of the whole process of making things in wood. I do use an elctric jigsaw though, so we'll probably be using that.

SIMPLE JOINTS ETC ETC We'll be cutting simple joints, sharpening and using planes, chisels and cabinet scrapers, shaping with rasps and files, and getting a really good finish including, (weather permitting), using stain, water based acrylic varnish and or oil/wax finish. We'll fit hinges, catches etc and we'll be thinking about sustainable design .

We have lots of different projects on the go at Inverqueich, including our tiny composting toilet on wheels, so you can see how useful these woodworking skills are around a garden, small holding or farm.

ANYTHING YOU WANT TO FIND OUT ABOUT?

I've done all sorts of woody stuff in my time - from making guitars, furniture, yurts and composting toilets to fitting kitchens...so do please let me know in advance if there's anything in particular you want to find out about -

FOOD AND DRINK Please bring some food and drink with you, though we should be able to provide some tea, coffee and cake. Kate is usually able to let us use her fine and cosy yurt for a lunch break and tea break.
