About this event

Join one of English Literature’s most enduring and ground-breaking female writers on a walk around Freshwater with Virginia Woolf.

With echoes of her iconic, shapeshifting and trans-cendant character Orlando, Virginia finds herself transported to the Isle of Wight in 2025 and takes us with her on a reminiscence trail of childhood holidays spent here with her Aunt, the celebrated Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron who lived at Dimbola Lodge, now a Museum & Gallery of her life and work.

We meet at the Wishing Well outside the Albion Hotel at 10.30 am on Sunday 31 August and walk with Virginia up past Hazelhurst towards St Agnes Church. After a brief stop there, we turn back to Dimbola and into the Gallery for a glimpse of Julia’s photographs of her famous friends, including the Poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson who lived at nearby Farringford Estate.

The walk takes approximately 50 mins and is on a gentle incline up to St Agnes Church. Please wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.

The project is made possible by Community Lottery Fund, Isle of Wight Heritage Services and in collaboration with Queer Heritage and Collections Network Creative Projects programme supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
