Event description
Deep Mapping: creating a sense of place

About this event

We are delighted to welcome Louise Kennedy to the Word Factory.

About This Masterclass

‘Deep mapping’ is a way of representing place that draws on a vertical sense of location: the language, geology, social history, folklore, archaeology. It adds depth, evokes the experience of being in a place, the thick layers of associations, senses and memory sedimented there. This way of looking can be invaluable for the fiction writer; place shapes, moves, unnerves, spooks, fills and depletes us. It is more than a backdrop. Louise Kennedy will show how she uses this approach in writing her own short stories, and look at how some of the best short story writers achieve a strong sense of place.
