Word In Your Ear presents The Beatles and Bowie for a one-off bill!
Mon 12 September 2016, 19:00 – 22:00 BST
Word In Your Ear is delighted to announce two literary heavy-hitters on the same night – Monday September 12 at the Islington pub in N1.
The terrific writer and broadcaster Paul Morley is coming to talk about his just-published, highly personal and intoxicating view of David Bowie’s life and artistic legacy. ‘The Age Of Bowie’ is a superb and passionate three-theories-a-minute perusal of the long-time hero he calls “a one-man song and dance index to the entire history of pop culture”. Every album and film appearance is scrutinised, every influence examined, every activity celebrated for its creative value and eccentricity. This promises to be a riveting event, Morley’s enthusiasm being unsurpassable (he was a curator of the recent ‘David Bowie Is’ exhibition at the V&A).
On the same night the magnificent Hunter Davies will be talking about his latest release, ‘The Beatles Book’, which covers every element of the band’s history and influences – and, incidentally, includes an entertaining and controversial grading system that evaluates the importance of various key aspects of the band’s story such as their 10 best songs (She Loves You, She Said She Said, Eleanor Rigby etc) and 10 worst songs (Wild Honey Pie, Savoy Truffle, and Oh! Darling among them). Hunter’s various books about The Beatles include his ground-breaking authorised biography, still selling to a world market 48 years after it was first published. It’s hard to imagine any writer better connected to his subject – he’s on the far left in the picture above, taken on a beach holiday with the McCartneys.
We imagine there’ll be rapid uptake for this WIYE night so ‘book early to avoid disappointment’!
