Event description

Description

This is the October rendition of Word Search LIVE at The Brook, in Wallington. The evening is split into two parts.

First Half

The first half is you guys - the spoken word open mic'ers. This is your moment to FIND and SPEAK your WORDS.

Rules are:-

  • One poem per slot.
  • Can be on anything you like at all.
  • Make us laugh, cry or stun us into silence - your choice.
  • Have fun and enjoy the atmosphere.

So, at the end of the open mic segment of the evening the audience will decide which open mic act/poem was their favourite by level of noise and the winner gets a 10 minute feature slot at the next Word Search LIVE event.

Sign-up for the open mic by purchasing an Open Mic ticket up until 2pm on the day of the event, or sign-up on the day (space permitting).

We operate a first come first served process in regards to this. There are 12 spots up for grabs so don't miss out!

Second Half

This half is the feature half where we have two fab acts for you:

Peter Hayhoe

Mixing the comedic with the inane Peter Hayhoe serves up rhythmical omelettes that surgically pull at your heartstrings.

Hailing from Penge, South East London, Peter is a former resident poet at Bang Said the Gun, multiple slam champion, and has featured at festivals such as Latitude, Secret Garden Party, and Lovebox.

In 2016 Peter launched Muddy Feet, a spoken word channel that aims to create unique work with both new and established poets. You can check out the Muddy Feet videos here.

Tommy Sissons

Tommy is a 20-year-old spoken word poet based between London and Brighton. He is the 2014 Slambassadors national slam champion, a finalist in the 2014 Roundhouse Poetry Slam, a Words First poet and a two-time regional Hammer and Tongue slam champion, coming 5th in the National Finals of 2013 and 2014.

Sissons has performed his poetry in venues across the UK such as the Royal Albert Hall, the Roundhouse Theatre and the Birmingham Reparatory Theatre, in addition to festivals such as Latitude, Bestival, Camp Bestival and Boomtown. In 2014, he performed his debut one-man show at Brighton’s Komedia, which received a sell-out crowd.

In November 2015, Tommy was commissioned by the BBC to write a poem for Remembrance Day, which was aired on both BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra. He also narrated two seasons of Channel 4's TV series 'Four to the Floor' by performing a poem at the start of each episode. Other clients of his include Red Bull, the Imperial War Museum, The National Trust and the Guardian newspaper.

Last year, Sissons’ poetry was studied by creative writing and literature students at the University of Trier in Germany and he has taught poetry workshops at schools, academies and colleges across the south of England. In March, he will be teaching a class in poetry at the V&A Museum as part of the ‘Making It’ event.

******************************************************

The evening is hosted by poet and spoken word artist Sarah Hobbs.

And all of this for only £3 (£2 for Open Mic'ers) - bargain. Either book online or you can pay on the door (we take card and cash payments).

The Brook also has a delightful vegan menu - if you fancy a meal before the show check out their menu by visiting their website: www.the-brook.co.uk.

Look forward to seeing you on Wednesday the 3rd of October.
