Event description

Description

This is the first time that Word Search LIVE has been at The Brook, in Wallington - so let's make this a massive success.

The evening is split into two parts.

First Half

The first half is you guys - the spoken word open mic'ers. This is your moment to FIND and SPEAK your WORDS.

Rules are:-

  • One poem per slot.
  • Can be on anything you like at all.
  • Make us laugh, cry or stun us into silence - your choice.
  • Have fun and enjoy the atmosphere.

So, at the end of the open mic segment of the evening the audience will decide which open mic act/poem was their favourite by level of noise and the winner gets a feature slot at the following months Word Search LIVE event.

Sign-up via email for the open mic by emailing wordsearchlive@gmail.com up until 1pm on the day of the event or sign-up on the day (space permitting).

We operate a first come first served process in regards to this. There are 12 spots up for grabs so don't miss out!

Second Half

This half is the feature half where we have two fab acts for you:

Joanna Harker Shaw

She has been writing and illustrating poems as long as she can recall and In 2013 she independently published a book of poetry called Songs of the River. She teaches creative writing workshops. For her 'day job' she tutors, and is finishing off her PhD in English Lit that looks at collaboration in literature, in particularly Mary and Percy Shelley. She has a great faith in the positive power of literature and the arts, and wants to be a part of that - so she's committed to creating poetry that expresses truth and always aims to ameliorate. Poetry is for pleasure, but is also part of contemporary discourse, and so she wishes to add poems of worth and value.

Rachel Sambrooks

Rachel started performing poetry, winning a spot for Budding Tongues at Boddington Festival in Manchester, runner up at Night and Day cafe slam. As character ‘Carole King’ was finalist in Birmingham New Act and Laughing Horse Big Big New Act comps. She also wrote stuff for BBC Radio, winning a Writer’s Room competition ‘The World Cup Tapes’ which was broadcast voiced by Sheridan Smith.

At the end of 2010 she returned to stand up comedy, resident stand up at Buddhafield Festival and runner up in Buddahfield Poetry slam, beating the gong in shows in Derby, Cheltenham and Wellingborough, performing around the country for promoters such as Buzz Comedy and Laffboro, promoting and Mcing Laffacino comedy nights at the Kitchen Garden Cafe in Birmingham, bringing in such headliners as Mrs Barbara Nice, Andy Robinson, Andy White.

After moving down south, she had comedy material broadcast in BBC Radio 4 Extra for Rose D’or winning series of Newsjack and subsequent series. Runner up in Sutton Poetry Slam 2014, gigged for Huggers kids comedy and told stories at Natural Born Storytellers and In a Nutshell, she gigged as a performance poet across London open mics.

She toured children’s comedy poetry and storytelling show ‘The Strangest Sandwich in the World’ 2015 at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Winchester Book Festival and Sutton Theatres. In 2013 she founded Words Aloud, a spoken word event in Sutton Library which has been going from strength to strength, funded by Arts Network Sutton.

She was awarded an Arts Council England grant to develop solo show ‘Eve and All Our Grandmothers’ which has successfully piloted at Sutton Libraries on a small tour.

Current projects include readings of new book ‘Ruffles’ with Arts Network Sutton grant and booking ‘Stand By Your Nan’ solo show.

‘Brilliant’ ~ Victoria Derbyshire, BBC Radio 5 live (World Cup Tapes)

‘Witty material’ ~ Behind the Arras

‘Innovative, earthy and warm’ ~ We Are Most Amused, Northampton
