Event description
Durham & Derwentside Breathe Easy support group and poet Christy Ducker showcase poetry on the lived experience of breathlessness.

About this Event

Stop where you are. Take a deep breath.

Whilst most can do this with relative ease, the experience of breathlessness is a symptom some must manage on a daily basis. These are the people who are at risk of becoming invisible to society.

Read over afternoon tea, Durham & Derwentside Breathe Easy support group will showcase their poetry, created with Catch Your Breath Writer-in-Residence Christy Ducker, to express their lived experience of breathlessness. Christy will read her work inspired by the Catch Your Breath exhibition, as well as her interactions with aware breathers and those experiencing breathlessness. Christy and filmmaker Kate Sweeney will also premiere two short films on which they’ve collaborated, focusing on the politics of breathlessness.

This event is part of the programme for Durham's Summer in the City Festival and Creativity and Wellbeing Week.

Breathe Easy support groups are set up across the country in association with the British Lung Foundation to provide a network of support for individuals experiencing breathlessness due to a lung condition.

Christy Ducker is a poet and teacher of creative writing. Her first full-collection Skipper was published in 2015, and includes work commended by the Forward Prize judges. Her pamphlet Armour (2011) was a PBS Pamphlet Choice. Two further pamphlets – Heroes (2016) and Messenger (2017) – have since followed. Her commissions include residencies with Port of Tyne, English Heritage, Edinburgh Surgeons’ Hall Museum, and York University’s Centre for Immunology and Infection. Christy also devised and directed North East Heroes, an archives and education project funded by Arts Council England. Christy has recently been working as a research fellow on poetry and health at Newcastle’s Institute for Creative Arts Practice.

Catch Your Breath is the exhibition output from the Life of Breath project, which is based at Durham University and the University of Bristol. Life of Breath is an interdisciplinary research project funded by Wellcome Trust, focusing on the every day experiences of breathing and breathlessness. The team includes individuals from all different backgrounds, including medicine, philosophy, anthropology, history, arts, and literature. Life of Breath also works with the British Lung Foundation, people affected by lung disease, healthcare professionals, and people who use their breath in interesting ways.
