WORDS IN ART
Live Class: Saturday 7th October 6pm `BST
+ 14 Days Recording Access
With Lucy McGeown
Explore how artists use text to confirm and confound, condense the power of words or isolate their meaning, transform text into image and create new narratives.
Now, more than at any other time in history, we’re surrounded by words – on the streets, on our screens and on public transport. Text has been used in art since Roman times and the two have been combined into a powerful form of expression since the 20th Century. From Cy Twombly in the 1950s to David Shrigley now, artists have explored the world of writing and text to uncover new meanings and modes of communication.
“I don't care if people think I can't draw, I'm just interested in communicating certain ideas in a certain way.” - David Shrigley
The use of text in art can be radical and subversive as well as absurd and playful. It can also be used to lend a sense of authority or to gravity a work. Art can turn the meanings of words on their heads and words can challenge or undermine how an image is read. Beyond the meaning of the words themselves and their interplay with the visual elements of a piece, letters and words can become their own visual medium.
In this class we’ll look at examples of how a cross-section of artists have used the power of words and language within their visual art practices. We’ll see how text in art can question the reliability of meaning, shift power and shape unusual narratives. You’ll play with ways to use text and imagery in your own work to connect, surprise, contextualise and create impact.

ARE YOU TRYING TO BOOK VIA THE EVENTBRITE PHONE APP?!
We have been in touch with Eventbrite, and they have informed us that currently you cannot book tickets to online events in their app. It's very frustrating and we have been assured they are working on a solution. In the meantime, we recommend that you book tickets to our events outside of the iOS app - either via a web browser or a desktop. If you book our classes regularly we recommend deleting the eventbrite App.
And that's it!
We're really looking forward to you joining us.
Love,
LDG
