Event description
Words Matter Lecture 2019: “Let others who were there tell their versions”: Music, storytelling and selfhood

About this Event

The YSJU English Literature programme is proud to host the third Words Matter lecture, this year given by Dr Fraser Mann on the theme of ‘Music, storytelling and selfhood’.

As a music fan, academic and self-confessed old-timer, Dr Fraser Mann explores the intersections and exchanges evident in music and stories told about and through music. Gigs, record collections and the visceral thrill of sonic experience are at the core of our cultural selfhood and self-conscious storytelling is the manner in which we communicate this. Fraser is as interested in personal stories shared in the pub as he is in those committed to print in the growing genre of the literary music memoir. These stories explore nostalgia yet resist its simplistic structures. They are funny, weird and artful. They communicate singular selfhood yet encourage shared memory. This lecture explores all of this and asserts the social and political value of such narrative processes. Join us for an evening of music, memory and sad stories about iPods.

Wine and soft drinks will be served in the De Grey lecture theatre before the start of the lecture. For any queries, please email the Subject Director, Dr Anne-Marie Evans (a.evans@yorksj.ac.uk)
