Words matter: Navigating inclusive language in a changing world

About this event

Inclusive language is a way of communicating that aims to avoid expressions or words that might exclude or marginalise certain groups of people. It focuses on using terms that are respectful and considerate of all individuals, regardless of their gender, race, disability, age, or other characteristics. It is crucial for fostering a sense of belonging and respect among diverse groups of people. 

This session will help you think about inclusive language in the context of your own work.

Interactive workshop with participation and discussion.  We appreciate you keeping your camera on and joining in when possible.  

Who is this event for?

Healthwatch staff and volunteers who are interested in inclusive language.  

What you will learn?

Inclusive language can be a challenging and sensitive topic and people can often question: am I saying the right thing? how do we keep up to date with new language? How do I address clumsy or offensive language when I observe it?  

In this 90-minute session, we will discuss:  

• Inclusive language principles and inclusive terms 

• Micro-incivilities, stereotypes and unconscious bias  

• The limits of workplace banter  

• Addressing non-inclusive language 

You will have the opportunity to ask questions and consider your own work situations.
