The conversational hypnosis patterns of Thom Shillaw

  • Understand how unconscious communication really works.
  • Communicate purposefully with the unconscious mind in the waking state.
  • Develop superior healing communications.

In 2008, a hypnosis teacher called Thom Shillaw made national headlines after a demonstration he did during a hypnosis course in Edinburgh. Renowned for powerful live demos, Thom helped a woman overcome colour blindness, a condition experts believe there is no cure for, in under 10-minutes and she saw colours for the first time in 50-years. Afterwards, Thom wondered if he could do the same thing using conversational hypnosis, that is, directly communicating with the unconscious mind in the waking using what seems on the surface like nothing more than a casual conversation.

Well versed in the existing conversational hypnosis methods, such as the patterns of Milton Erickson, and NLP’s Milton Model, Thom tried for years to get the same powerful results he was known for through hypnosis but with mixed success. The breakthrough occurred in 2012 when Thom discovered that the contents of reference memories, the root causes of unique learned behaviours, were revealed in body language, a fact which psychology had overlooked.

Studying reference memories made Thom realise that all communication stimulated a search for equivalent contents in the listener to activate the reference memories which held information about how to respond. Until then, conversational hypnosis theory had been biased by the NLP attitude that communication resulted in searching for deeper linguistic structures. Thom found out that this idea was incorrect as structuring is only a secondary phenomenon. Recognising that the spoken word typically communicates the contents of reference memories, symbolically, metaphorically, and literally, Thom began to code and work with the patterns from these (primary) imprint maps and develop a content based approach to doing conversational hypnosis, a radically different perspective from the NLP ‘content free’ and post-Erickson ‘artfully vague’ approaches.

In 2014, 7-years after the initial project began, another woman approached Thom during a Licensed Advanced NLP Master Practitioner seminar which Thom taught in Norway. She explained that she was also colour blind and asked if he could help her. That afternoon, as the woman sat in the audience, without anyone realising that he was doing anything, Thom began using his new approach. Within 10-minutes, the woman approached Thom in shock – she saw colours for the first time in 50-years! (click to see the video of this demonstration)

Convinced in the supremacy of his method, Thom spent the next 2-years developing models which would enable other people to learn the skills which he’d acquired. The results include the Shillaw WORDS Method, a powerful conversational hypnosis model. Unlike ritual hypnosis which is characterised by a sleep-like state, conversational hypnosis is an expanded consciousness about human communication and can therefore be used to help people in any environment.

Ideal for coaches, therapists, or anyone who wants to develop a powerful conversational way of helping others to overcome problems, though detailed examples, powerful demonstrations, practical exercises and discussions, Thom will teach people the Shillaw WORDS Method.

Selected Testimonials

"Thom's advanced course is completely different from anything else out there. We spent the whole course entranced, learning by osmosis, and by the end of it we were automatically using the new patterns conversationally and able to go out into our everyday lives with a whole new skill set. His passion and enthusiasm is captivating; his knowledge up there with the masters." - Susan Long, Brighter Mind Hypnotherapy, Edinburgh

"A whole month has passed since the course and, whilst I am not consciously using different language patterns, they just come out of my mouth when needed. Consequently, my ability to communicate and be understood by family members and clients alike is noticeably improved.Thom's approach of an almost permanent trance-state for the duration of the course is really helpful in allowing you to re-connect with yourself and go home knowing who you are and what you want. This works in both a corporate-success arena as well as a more personal one. I think the reason that Thom's successful teaching can improve communication and esteem in any area of life is because he truly is able to guide each individual toward what they need and want rather than any underlying agenda some trainers can have." - Sharon Price, Sport Injury and Remedial Therapist, Berkshire

"The central focus of much of the training is exploring therapeutic potential as well as increasing awareness of communication in all its forms. The training environment that Thom creates is both innovative and supportive which is all important as it can be intense and produce dynamic shifts as the trainees work together. To sum up I would say that training with Thom has been life changing, strengthening and has drastically altered the way I approach my personal and professional life, everyone should do it!" - Amanda Burnett, Complimentary Therapist, Edinburgh
