Words to be Seen, Images to be Read: the forms and functions of Medieval Manuscript Illumination By Professor Michelle Brown

About this event

Michelle is one of the leading experts of Medieval Manuscripts. She was the Curator of Illuminated Manuscripts at the British Library and Professor of Manuscript Studies at the University of London. Prof Brown has written many books, features on TV and Radio and lectures worldwide.

With an engaging style Michelle presents a fascinating topic with good humour. As a result the lectures are engaging and captivating, appealing to a wide audience. 

Manuscripts connected to Shrewsbury and the local area will be featured, including the historical works of Orderic Vitalis. 

Orderic was born in Shropshire in 1075. He was the boy prodigy of Shrewsbury Abbey. He chronicled the Norman takeover of Britain. 

The illustrated talk will look at the styles and purpose of manuscript illumination. She will Examine the wider historical and cultural context and the effect of the manuscripts on the Arts. How they effect architecture, sculpture, metal work and stained glass will be explored.

A short recital by Roger Firman, from Hereford on the newly restored Hills Organ will take place before the lecture.
