"Work, folk and place" An evening with Derek Pretswell

Come join us at Càrn Ústaidh Hub with ecologist Derek Pretswell! Dive into the world of work, folk, and the importance of place with Derek as he shares his insights and experiences.

Our speaker, Derek Pretswell, is a native of Perth. After graduating from the University of Aberdeen with a degree in Zoology, he worked for twenty years as a fishery biologist at the Government’s Fresh Water Fisheries Laboratory in Pitlochry. There he met Ron Greer and together they researched Arctic Charr populations in Highland lochs.

With Ron, Derek jointly developed the New Caledonia project, before continuing the association through the national award-winning Loch Garry Tree Group and Scottish Native Woods (of which Derek was a Trustee for ten years)

Derek was a member of Cairngorm Community Circle, Highland Scandinavian Society and Development Officer for Highland Perthshire Communities Partnership, regularly broadcasting on environmental issues for Perthshire’s Heartland FM. He was a founding member of Perth Bat Group; trustee and former chairman of the Resource Use Institute and spent 15 years teaching environmental education to schoolchildren from North Lanarkshire.

He was a member of the SNP’s environment committee that wrote the Party’s 1990 policy document.

He describes himself as “now retired but not retiring!”

Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be available for donation.
