Description

Event Details:

As one HR academic remarked recently, “HR people used to be really good at workforce planning. Then they stopped. What happened?”

Has a flexible labour market and a plentiful supply of skilled English-speaking workers made us complacent? In the short term Brexit is likely to constrict our labour supply. In the longer term, global demographic pressures may see the working age population shrinking in many economies. Does HR need to rediscover the lost art of strategic workforce planning? Are HR strategies dead, ineffective or a conspiracy to drive shareholder value at the expense of other stakeholders?

Duncan Brown of the Institute for Employment Studies will be sharing his research on labour market developments and leading a discussion on how HR can set the workforce agenda for the next decade, including the very positive findings from his latest research study with CIPD.

This will include:

  • An assessment of the current UK labour market
  • How far is Brexit to blame for current recruitment difficulties?
  • Case studies from nursing and higher education
  • Has the War for Talent re-started?
  • Does training and upskilling work? – the evidence
  • New IES and CIPD research on Strategic People Management, published in April 2019
  • Tools, hints and tips

Duncan Brown leads the HR consultancy work at IES. He has more than 25 years' experience in HR consulting and research, with firms including Aon Hewitt, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Towers Perrin. He also spent 5 years as Assistant Director General at the CIPD. He is a prolific writer and speaker, with regular articles and blogs in the HR press. His last book was on reward effectiveness. Human Resources magazine placed him in its listing of the top five most influential thinkers in UK HR in the past three years.
