Workhouse Walks: return to the former Bath Union Workhouse and burial groun...
Wed 20 September 2017, 10:00 – 15:00 BST
On 23 July 1856, the boys from the Bath Workhouse, with their schoolmaster William Winkworth, completed a walk of 16 miles from the Workhouse around the northern fringes of Bath, returning via Bathampton Down. This was the culmination of a series of walks around the parishes of Bath.
This is one of a series of performative walks in the summer of 2017.
Return to the workhouse: from the Museum of Bath at Work via Clavertown downs on Winkworths epic route. We make our way back to the burial field where we will pay our respects to those died in the workhouse, some of the unplaqued dead of the city. Approx 7 miles but contact the organiser for timings so as to join the route along the way.
Registration is essential. Numbers are limited.
These walks are an attempt to explore on foot and with our bodies that journey and to examine the themes which may emerge as we reflect on those times from these times The first walk begins at the workhouse, the last returns us. In July join us for a walk as close as possible to the 1856 route. This project is developed in collaboration with Dr John Payne whose exhibition ‘Workhouse to Hospital’ at the Museum of Bath at Work opens on 18 May
The first walk begins in a field alongside the workhouse where the bodies of 3182 people who had the misfortune to die there between 1839 and 1899 are buried, in unmarked graves. Perhaps here lie the parents or grandparents of the boys, perhaps some of the boys themselves.
The project coincides with the exhibition Dr John Payne has researched: Workhouse to Hospital. for The Museum of Bath at Work. The exhibition records the history of the Bath Union Workhouse at Odd Down, now the site of St Martin’s Hospital.
