Event description
A collaborative group game following on from Navigating Disaster. It takes the players through different public art issues.

About this event

Working In The Public Realm is a collaborative group game following on from Navigating Disaster. It takes the players through different scenarios about working as an artist in the public realm, from commissioned installations to street-art activism.

Participants choose a role to play from a choice of ‘artist’, ‘organiser’, ‘curator’, ‘technician’, or ‘funder’. In their chosen roles players work together to play and eliminate Doom cards, plan and resolve Scenario Cards and collect interlocking points (grey for knowledge and orange for errors). Points are awarded by the game Host and during game play. As the game progresses these interlocking points will help the players build a structure and visualise how healthy their knowledge and practice is. The aim of the game is to finish with as few orange points as possible in their interlocking structure. Players will receive a link to a useful Working in the Public Realm Handbook which includes useful signposting to areas they may wish to research further.

The game will run from 10:00am-1:00pm. Participants are very welcome to stay until 2:00pm for a light lunch, discussion and networking if they wish.

Who is it for?

Practicing artists, curators, event organisers, technicians, land owners, based anywhere in the UK who are interested in learning, developing or honing their skills and knowledge about legal and moral practicalities concerning their art practice.

What will it involve?

A 3-hour day session including two breaks on the 5th October from 10.00am - 1.00pm. Participants are very welcome to stay until 2pm for a light lunch, discussion and networking if they wish.

The sessions will be based at Arcadia Gallery, upstairs - 26 City Arcade, Town Centre, Coventry CV1 3HW - and will be hosted by a staff member from Artspace. Participants are encouraged to shape the conversation and to share their own relevant experiences.

What will I gain?

The opportunity to learn about, share and widen your knowledge on what to expect if you work in the public realm, what you need to be aware of, who you might be working with and how it might change the way you are used to working.
