Working it out: responses and recommendations to the rise in self-employmen...
Tue 21 February 2017, 09:00 – 10:30 GMT
Self-employment in the UK is rising, and it brings challenges as well as opportunities. Join us to launch a new pamphlet edited by Rachel Reeves, Labour Member of Parliament for Leeds West, to discuss those challenges and responses for policymakers to consider.
The pamphlet looks at the rising trend in self-employment from a variety of perspectives, including tax, regulation and red tape, pensions and mortgages, trade unions and the self-employed, enterprise education, coops, and the legal status of the self-employed. It identifies a range of challenges encountered by the self-employed, and makes recommendations for what needs to be done to address them.
Join the SMF and chapter authors Rachel Reeves MP, John Park, Assistant General Secretary of Community, social entrepreneur Jane Walton and Benedict Dellot from the Royal Society of Arts on the day of the pamphlet's launch to discuss the evolving landscape of self-employment in the UK.
This event is sponsored by trade union Community.

Benedict Dellot is the Associate Director of Economics at the RSA. Ben has written widely on self-employment, and his latest report makes the case for a more hands-on policy approach - one that would improve the productivity and earnings potential of those who work for themselves.
