Overview

Working through the Trauma Transference: Offering A New Kind of Relationship Workshop with Kate Williams

Transference is a well known phenomena in the therapeutic world but is it fully understood, particularly in relation to developmental trauma and attachment ruptures?

When wounds have occurred at a young age the pain can be so intolerable that there can be an ongoing seeking for another to soothe that pain. This can result in a person believing that their unmet needs can only be met outside of themselves, by another, which often leads to high expectations being placed onto the therapist with themes of being let down and even harmed.

Conversely, a client's blueprint might hold experiences of damaging relational bonds with another who was in a more power position and should have cared for and protected them. This expectation can be unconsciously placed on the therapist and even re-enacted if not brought into the light.
