Event description

Description

Working together to tackle serious violent crime
by Mark Burns-Williamson OBE

West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williams OBE is the latest high-profile speaker in Leeds Law School’s popular Law in Practice series.

Active within the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners (APPC), and current National Chair, Mark has taken lead roles driving work around Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking, representing all PCCs. He has been the Chair of the National Police Air Service Board (NPAS) since its formation in 2013 and also chairs the West Yorkshire Local Criminal Justice Board (LCJB).

Mark will share his experiences both locally within West Yorkshire and nationally as Chair of the APPC, around harnessing support to tackle serious violent crime. He will detail the challenges around identifying the key issues, tackling causes and not just symptoms as well as funding, competing priorities and understanding what a ‘public health approach’ means. Mark recognises that we cannot ‘enforce our way out’ of the current developing situation, particularly with regards to our engagement with young people.

Don’t miss your opportunity to hear from our regions Police and Crime Commissioner, as he questions how we reduce the threat of serious violent crime without criminalising a generation?
