Assessment criteria are crucial in establishing a clear understanding between staff and students about what is expected from assessed work. Yet despite their importance, the use of assessment criteria is still an area of assessment practice that persistently underperforms in the NSS. The aim of this practical workshop is to discuss the key elements that make effective assessment criteria, and allow staff the opportunity to critically reflect on the assessment criteria and rubrics that they currently use. The session will also focus on practical ways to enhance NSS scores, culminating in the creation of a series of simple guiding principles to guide the use of assessment criteria.

The aims of this session are to:

  • Discuss what makes effective assessment criteria
  • Critique current assessment criteria and supporting rubrics used
  • Identify practical ways to enhance NSS scores around assessment criteria
  • Develop a set of simple guiding principles for the use of assessment criteria
