Course overview

Our Working with Children and Young People training course is an entry level programme that will provide a basic understanding of the principles for working with children and young people. The course is made up of four discrete units of learning, each of which can be purchased separately. Each unit consists of five hours of training over a single day (four days for all four units). As such, participants are free to book the four days of training either consecutively, or in blocks to suit their personal requirements and schedule. However, we would recommend that participants who wish to access all four units should do so over a period of no longer than six months in order to ensure continuity within the training themes.

Target Audiences

We will provide you with all the knowledge and skills potential employers and organisations that work with children, young people and families will be looking for in their employees and volunteers. Our course is suited to those already in the children's workforce and those completely new to it, such as:

  • School support staff

  • Parents and carers

  • Those leaving the armed forces

  • Those looking to volunteer or gain employment in the charity sector

  • Those running community groups

  • Those looking to work in the childcare sector.

Course Units

Unit 1 - The Children's Workforce

This unit is all about the national landscape for children and young people services and the different types of role and opportunities that exist. We also explore some of the basic policy and principles that people who are looking to enter the children's workforce will need to be aware of. The unit covers:

  • The different types of organisations that work with children, young people and families

  • What employers working in this sector will be looking for in prospective employees and volunteers

  • The basics around the legislation and policy that affect all organisations and people working with children and young people

  • The practicalities of working with children, young people and families - communication, and understanding need and outcomes.

This unit provides the fundamental basics about working in the children's workforce. Participants attending the course will have a firm grasp of the different roles available to them, as well as an understanding of the key considerations when working with children, young people and families.

Unit 2 - Managing Challenging Behaviour

This unit is all about understanding the causes of challenging behaviour in the context of child development and exploring strategies for working with children and young people that display challenging behaviours:

  • Identifying positive and challenging behaviour

  • Ages and stages - child development in context

  • Rules, rewards and sanctions

  • Effective behaviour management strategies

  • Skills for working with children and young people

  • Developing a career working with children and young people.

The Managing Challenging Behaviour unit will provide participants with new skills and equip you with the basic understanding you need to enter into a role (paid or voluntary) working with children and young people.

Unit 3 - Dealing with Trauma and Attachment

This unit is all about understanding the basics of how attachment works in the context of child development and the implications for this for people working or volunteering in the children's workforce. The training also explores the different types of trauma that can occur in the lives of children and young people and its effect of attachment and child development.

It is important to note that this unit is not about providing treatments for children that have experienced trauma. It is more about understanding how attachment works so that participants can engage with children and young people in a safe and supportive way. As such the unit covers the following:

  • The basics of child development

  • The attachment cycle

  • Trauma

  • Maintaining professional distance

  • Dealing with difficult circumstances.

The Dealing with Trauma and Attachment unit will leave participants with an understanding of the principles of child development and how to engage with children and young people in a safe and supportive way.

Unit 4 - Essential Skills for Working with Children and Young People

This unit provides participants with an overview of the six sets of key skills that are essential for working with children and young people across a wide range of different settings. This includes:

  • Effective communication and engagement

  • Child and young person development

  • Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the child

  • Supporting transitions

  • Multi-agency working

  • Sharing information.

This unit will leave participants with a basic understanding of the skills necessary to work or volunteer in the children's workforce, as well as how they can continue to develop these skills.

Additional Information

Course participants will also be signposted to local Careers information, advice and guidance services in order to facilitate access to opportunities to work and volunteer in the children's workforce.

Participants will receive a certificate of attendance, which will be sent via email once they have completed each unit of training.
