This session introduces collage as an arts-based research method. This particular type of collage allows materials to be placed and moved as thinking develops. Dr Suzanne Culshaw will outline how she used collage in her research with teachers and school leaders and will guide attendees through the collage-creation process. So, attendees will not only be introduced to the theory behind using collage, they will also experience its use in practice. Attendees will have the opportunity to share the meaning of their collages with others and to undertake an initial analysis of collage data using an analytical framework developed by Suzanne. Examples will also be shared of how collage can be used in person as well as online, and with individuals as well as groups. This is a highly interactive session which aims to stimulate interest in using arts-based methods such as collage in research settings.

Dr Suzanne Culshaw is a part-time research fellow, teacher educator and educational adviser. Her research interests include teacher wellbeing, leadership development and the use of arts-based and embodied research methods. She has used collage in a range of research projects, in face-to-face and online settings. Suzanne is keen to spread the word about the power of collage as a visual way of making meaning. Please note: Attendees will need to bring a range of materials with them to the online session. You might like to have a look around at home or in your workplace for materials of different colours and textures. For example, arts and crafts materials, stationery items such as paper clips, paper, pens, post-it stickers, buttons, ribbon… general bits and bobs, whatever you’ve got lying around that you might like to use. You do not need glue for this particular form of collage.
