Overview

Working with High-Risk Clients in Supported Accommodation delivered by Sharon Clint, Groundswell

This practical training helps staff recognise and respond to risks while balancing safety, dignity, and quality of life.

Why manage risk?

High-risk clients may face issues such as health emergencies, substance use, self-neglect, exploitation, fire risk, or safeguarding concerns. Without proactive planning, these risks can escalate, affecting not only the client but also other residents, staff, and the wider community. Effective risk management reduces harm, supports independence, protects staff and residents, and meets safeguarding duties.

What the training covers:

  • Pre-training exercise to locate useful resources.
  • Who high-risk clients are and what makes them vulnerable
  • Case studies to recognise risks and planning responses
  • Staff safety, boundaries, and wellbeing
  • Tools for assessing, documenting, and prioritising risk
  • Harm reduction, and personalised safety planning
  • Communication skills for high-risk and end-of-life conversations
  • Escalation pathways and working with safeguarding/multi-agency partners
