Event description

Description

It is estimated that approximately 30% of male prisoners and 60% of women prisoners have been in care as children.

Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is working to improve the identification and support of people who were in care as children and are now over 18, referred to as ‘care leavers’.

The intention of the conference is to bring together staff and managers from prisons, probation, local authorities and the voluntary sector to hear the voices of care leavers and discuss how we can work better together to support them.

The conference will be opened by Michael Spurr, CEO of HMPPS

Other confirmed speakers include Lisa Cherry - independent lecturer, and keynote speaker in trauma, resilience and recovery

A wide range of workshops will be available to choose from which will showcase good practice and be facilitated by specialists from Prison, Probation, Voluntary Sector and Local Authority backgrounds. The workshops will cover topics such as

- Working with Care Leavers – from a Prison Perspective

- Family Engagement for Care Leavers whilst in a custodial environment

- Support for Care Leavers accommodation and support with resettlement

- The importance of Partnership Working

- Life Skills & Life After Custody

- An introduction to Care Leavers

There will be opportunities to meet with partner organisations and further develop joint working via focus groups and feedback sessions.
