Working with Male Victims of Domestic Abuse

About this Event

This course will increase participants’ working knowledge of male victims of domestic abuse. It explores how the experiences of male and female victims differ. It provides information about the nature, scale and incidence of intimate partner violence against men. Participants will practice skills to identify the support needs male victims and respond appropriately. Following training, participants will have online access to the Respect Toolkit for Work with Male Victims of Domestic Violence.

Training course objectives

1. Develop understanding of key terms/concepts and legislation;

2. Understand the domestic abuse experiences of men and their help-seeking barriers;

3. Identify additional challenges and help-seeking barriers for GBT* men or men from specific ethnic backgrounds;

4. Learn to identify “who is doing what to whom and with what consequences”;

5. Learn how to use the brief assessment and the longer assessment tools;

6. Develop skills in assessing the risks to and needs of male victims;

7. Gain skills in responding appropriately to male victims

What will I learn?

Participants will learn how to identify, assess and respond to male victims of domestic abuse using the Respect Toolkit for Work with Male Victims.

By the end of the training participants will:

• Have increased their understanding of the experiences of male victims – in heterosexual or same-sex relationships;

• Know how to support of male victims;

• Understand the process of assessing who is doing what to whom;

• Be more confident about engaging with male victims

Who is this course suitable for?

• Frontline Workers supporting male victims in their day-to-day work;

• Practitioners who come into contact with male victims occasionally, such as Social Workers, Cafcass officers, Counsellors, Healthcare Workers etc.

• Anyone interested in supporting male victims.
