This workshop will be facilitated by James Hawes who specialises in working with boys and men and 95% of his clients are male.

More men than ever are attending therapy and asking for help with mental health problems and yet while therapy may offer a supportive environment many men are turned off by thisforeignenvironment. When men do attend they can occasionally encounter a lack of understanding and empathy leaving them confused and unsure whether to return.

This workshop and training will help the practitioner have greater awareness and

The training will include:

  • knowledge to work with men more effectively.
  • Increase understanding about the impact of traditional masculinity, man-up culture and the male code often leaving men with the trauma of emotional restraint
  • Toolbox of ideas in developing successful therapeutic work with men, building rapport, making psychological contact and building their emotional fitness.
  • Effective psycho-educational tools to help men increase their emotional fitness, emotional awareness and regulation.
  • Gaining a greater understanding about a mans emotional world, his emotional development, defences and coping strategies

About the facilitator – James Hawes

James is a trained and experienced psychotherapist and counsellor. He is an accredited and registered member
of the British association for Counsellors and psychotherapists
He has worked for the Nottingham City behaviour support team and MAST (Multi agency support team) for eight years. James has also worked as a therapist for the past ten years in many of the city schools working with students individually, in groups and with families.

James specialises in developing boys and men’s emotional fitness with over ten years of therapeutic experience. During this time he has worked successfully with hundreds of boys individually and in groups. James has been working with boys for over twenty five years in a variety of roles included detached work and youth clubs. For the past ten years he has worked in both primary and secondary schools as a counsellor and behaviour consultant.

James also initiated the Men@work voluntary organisation, working to increase boys and men’s emotional fitness, establishing a programme called ‘Contact’ an outdoor and residential programme to help boys increase their emotional fitness. Additionally James recently contributed a chapter to a published book called ‘Exploited childhood’.
