Working With Narcissists and Echoists- (partners, children and co dependent objects of the narcissist)
WORKSHOP SPEAKER: DONNA SAVERY
In this workshop Donna Savery explains her understanding of narcissism and uses clinical material and case studies to exemplify her approach to working with narcissistic clients. She provides insight and interactive exercises to help identify a narcissistic client and discusses ways to build trust and keep them in therapy long enough to be able to work with them in the (often rare) moments that they are available for some therapeutic contact.
The second part of the day focuses on the partners of narcissists or those in a co-dependent relationship with a narcissist, whom she calls echoists. She goes back to the original myth of Echo and Narcissus to help understand the phenomenon of the echoist and describes her own original research in finding ways to work with them to improve their chances of recovering from this style of relating and to seek out healthier relationships, through the therapeutic encounter. She shares her work with individual clients, groups and co-dependent couples. The day includes:
- Identifying narcissists and echoists
- Defining narcissism and echoism
- Background research into the myth
- An approach combining psychoanalytic and existential theories of the mind
- Case studies and clinical vignettes
- Whole group and small group discussion
- Interactive exercises
