Aims of the Event
This workshop is an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of self-harm and self-injury and reflect on our capacity to work with this issue in the clinical setting. A harm-minimisation approach will underpin the workshop - the aim is not to make people stop their self-harming behaviour, but rather to enable them to face the underlying issues and, over time, develop alternative and safer ways of coping.

Programme
We will revisit the terms ‘self-harm’ and ‘self-injury’ and their various definitions and descriptions.
We will examine the links between self-harm and suicide, and discuss assessment.
We will think about why people may self harm and who seems to be more likely to do so.
We will examine the links between mental health issues and self-harm, including attachment styles.
We will explore different ways of supporting people who self-harm in the counseling context, drawing on the experience of the group.

About the Facilitator
Wendy Armstrong is a BACP Accredited Counsellor/Psychotherapist. She has a professional background in Nursing and completed a Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling in 1999 and a Postgraduate Masters in Psychoanalytic Studies in 2007. Wendy has wide-ranging experience of therapeutic practice in various NHS services, including Sexual Health, Adult Psychotherapy, Eating Disorder Services and Child & Adolescent Mental Health. She has also worked in private practice and other services in the UK and abroad. In addition, Wendy really enjoys working with colleagues to help them reflect on and develop their practice. To this end she provides clinical supervision and has facilitated numerous training courses and workshop events.

Who is it for?
Counsellors and psychotherapists often come across self-harming behaviours in their work and it can feel quite commonplace to some, but can be useful to take time to think about this in more depth and examine what we do and why we do it with those clients. Other staff in the caring professions are also very welcome to join the workshop, including those who support children and young people, or adults, in community or school based support services.

How much?
£60 if paid in advance or £65 at the door.
Refreshments, snacks, handouts and CPD certificate are included in the price.
Note – lunch is not included.

How do I register?
Above or by requesting and registration form from audrey@greenwoodevents.co.uk.
