This is event is for staff working in Primary Care in Nottingham & Nottinghamshire
Aim of this Event
- To provide an overview of the psychological impact of trauma.
- To recognise the impact of working with trauma on ‘helpers’.
- To develop skills to respond to the potential for vicarious trauma in ‘helpers’.
Target Audience
All health care staff from clinicians to non clinical who have dealt with emotional situations / trauma.
Objectives
- To have an understanding of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- To have an understanding of complex trauma.
- To develop an awareness of what makes a service ‘trauma informed’.
- To develop an awareness of how working with trauma can lead to a range of responses such as burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma and secondary trauma in health workers.
- To be introduced to some techniques which can be protective against vicarious trauma.
- To be introduced to some skills which can support ‘helpers’ who are experiencing the impact of vicarious trauma.
Meet the Speaker
Dr Jessica Lewis is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist who has worked with trauma for over 30 years. Prior to her retirement in 2023 she worked within the National High Secure Healthcare Service for Women, Rampton Hospital. Within this post she had over 15 years experience of supporting the development of trauma informed services, including services specifically designed to support staff exposed to high levels of direct and vicarious trauma. For the past 18 months she has provided specialist supervision to Mental Health Occupational Therapists (MHOTs) within PICS.

This event is planned because respondents to the Nottinghamshire Alliance Training Hub (NATH) Primary Care Training Needs Analysis (TNA) 2024/25 suggested the topic as a local training need.
