This workshop will provide counsellors with a comprehensive introduction to the challenges faced by individuals living with visible differences, drawing on evidence that over a million people in the UK have a significant disfigurement to the face or body.
Research indicates that around 48% of adults affected experience at least borderline clinical levels of anxiety, highlighting the importance of accessible and effective psychological support.
Against this background, the workshop will introduce participants to a range of intervention approaches including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), grief and loss approaches, and social skills training, before presenting Face IT, an innovative, evidence-based online intervention that offers a more widely accessible and cost-effective option.
Through this session, counsellors will gain practical insights and tools to enhance their practice and better support clients navigating the psychological and social complexities of living with a visible difference.
