Bringing Ponds Back to Life: Restoring Overgrown Ponds in Norfolk

Norfolk has more ponds than any other English county, with over 23,000 remaining. Many were created between the 17th and 19th centuries for marl and clay extraction or to water crops and livestock. Changes in agricultural practices and land use over the past 50 years have led to a widespread decline in ponds, with many becoming overgrown with trees and scrub or being filled in entirely. This decline reflects a national trend, with around one-third of UK ponds believed to have vanished.

Norfolk FWAG and our partners in the Norfolk Ponds Project (NPP) are working to restore these habitats.

Join Norfolk FWAG and NPP for an engaging event exploring the science and practice of pond restoration. Discover how bringing neglected ponds back to life can transform landscapes and boost biodiversity, and hear from leading experts Professor Carl Sayer and Helen Greaves, co-founders of the Norfolk Ponds Project, as they share their knowledge on the ecological importance of pond restoration and the vital role ponds play in supporting wildlife. Learn how Norfolk FWAG and other Habitat Delivery Bodies* can cover 100% of the costs for eligible Pond Restorations through the District Level Licensing Scheme, and watch a practical demonstration by our specialist contractor, who will be restoring two overgrown ponds during the event.

This event is free, and has kindly been funded by the Royal Countryside Fund. Please limit attendance to one person per NGO.

*Other Norfolk Habitat Delivery Bodies are Norfolk Wildlife Trust and Norfolk County Council.
