Event description

Description

The Black and Ethnic Minority (BEM) staff group of the Aberdeen UCU warmly invites you to its first Equality, Diversity and Inclusion lunchtime seminar. The seminar series will explore the opportunities, and benefits of diversity and inclusion programmes; the barriers to their implementation and the solutions to the barriers.

By emphasising the benefits of unlocking the talents among the ethnic minority groups, the "Race in the workplace" review report (BEIS, 2017) appears to paint a rosy picture of the huge potential of WDI programmes. According to the report, the UK stands to gain an extra £24 billion annually, if large employers of labour would ensure that the labour market progression rates for the different labour categories are the same for the ethnic minority and white employees. Yet, there remain barriers and the speed to widespread successful WDI programmes is slow.

Against this backdrop of the competing views on the real benefits of diversity and inclusion programmes, our speakers will, by focusing especially on race and gender, help answer the questions in the series' theme by presenting and querying the evidence on what has worked or not among the myriad of diversity programmes, efforts and investments. Moreover, we hope that we might be able to proffer workable solutions and practical steps and policies that may be needed for more effective diversity and inclusion programmes at UK universities.

Speakers include:

  • Dave Black, Grampian Regional Equality Council

  • Christopher Nicholas, Equality Support Official, University & College Union

  • Representative of Senior Management Team, University of Aberdeen (to be confirmed)

  • Academic speaker specialising in Equality & Diversity issues (to be confirmed)
