Description

The World Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health Day on 10 October every year. This year’s theme set by the World Federation for Mental Health is mental health in the workplace.

Work is a key factor in supporting and protecting as well as influencing the state of our mental health. It has been identified by a recent workplace mental health and wellbeing survey, that 86% of all people who participated believed that their job and being at work was important to protecting and maintaining their mental health. Whether individuals have experienced a mental health problem or not, feeling stressed at work due to overwork, long working hours, unreasonable targets, colleagues who may be perceived as difficult and general burn out can leave people feeling very distressed and lead to mental health problems further down the line.

It has been reported that distress is an issue that affects a major proportion of the workforce and over a third of participants in the survey reported that distress had left them less productive than they would like to have been.

Research has also highlighted that women in full-time employment are nearly twice as likely to have a common mental health problem as a full-time employed man (19.8% vs 10.9%) and evidence suggests that 12.7% of all sickness absence days in the UK can be attributed to mental health conditions.
