Description

Workshop 4: Supporting carers in our community through education

Jenny Shand and Geraldine Rodgers

A significant proportion of people over 85 years of age live in care homes and have complex healthcare needs. This puts them at particular risk of admission to hospital or significant deterioration in their functional status. Over the past three decades, independent ownership and management of care homes has grown, with inconsistent presence of NHS services for residents. Typically, the care home workforce is poorly developed and supported, and characterised by high turnover and low levels of skills development. There is an opportunity to help care home workers feel more confident in their care giving role.

This workshop will introduce participants to the “Significant Seven” – an education and decision tool the North East London NHS Foundation Trust have developed for upskilling care home staff, and supporting them to care for their residents. The workshop will also share ambitions to use this tool with the general public following interviews with carers in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge.
