Workshop 8: The challenges of managing challenging behaviour: A cross-specialty training initiative
Bini Thomas, Matthhew Fernando and Kala Shanmugananda
This workshop will look at how to design teaching across multiple specialties. It will explore a module on children and young people with learning disabilities that was targeted at GPs and developed as a collaboration between paediatric, mental health and learning disabilities services. Young people with learning disabilities face enormous disparity in accessing physical and mental health when compared to the general population, and nationally there is an emphasis on ensuring a holistic approach to the management of ‘challenging behaviours’. This module, part of the UCLPartners Breaking Down the Barriers Programme, was designed to help address this.
The workshop will focus on why the module was needed, how to get the right people involved, and how to make sure that teaching is aimed appropriately to the audience. The workshop will also include a taster of the programme, looking at the challenges faced by young people with learning disabilities and their families. Finally, it will look at feedback from the pilot and look ahead to future initiatives.
