The government has published important consultations on migrants' access to healthcare and renting private accommodation. At this meeting we will
- present the main proposals in the consultations,
- discuss with participants their likely impact on migrant communities and
- suggest ways to respond to the consultations.
There are parallel Home Office and Department of Health consultations on access to health services. The proposals include introducing a levy for temporary migrants to access NHS services, introducing charges for primary care for visitors and irregular migrants and implementing a system to record eligibility and charge patients. These consultations close on 28th August.
The Home Office is consulting on irregular migrants accessing private rented accommodation. The proposals include requiring landlords to check immigration status of people renting properties, prohibiting landlords from letting property to irregular migrants and introducing a system of civil penalties for those who do. This consultation closes on 21st August.
These consultations will have a significant impact on migrant and BME communities, and especially on irregular migrants.
