Workshop: Designing a sustainable study profile metadata portal

Welcome to our upcoming workshop where we will dive into the world of designing a sustainable study profile metadata portal.

Join us on July 22, 2025 at 1:00 PM (Europe/London Time) to help us creating an efficient and user-friendly portal for your study profiles.

Overview

This is an interactive online workshop to help shape the development of a sustainable, study-led metadata portal that supports dynamic sharing of study-level metadata content across existing metadata platforms.

All Longitudinal Population Studies (LPS) naturally want to promote their data to as broad a research community as possible, often creating entries on many metadata catalogues to facilitate this. Added to this, many LPS deposit data in different platforms, all of which require another study metadata profile.

Why this matters:

We want to cut the burden on studies by providing a portal where studies can maintain a single study profile which then automatically populates profiles across key metadata platforms, ensuring easy and rapid updates and version control.

What to expect:

This 2h session is aimed at gathering input from study teams, data managers, and related stakeholders to define the high-level functionality, core metadata content, and to map the platforms used in order to support interdisciplinary discovery of research studies and datasets.

The focus of this workshop will be on what metadata the system should contain - not the detail on how it should be technically implemented. It will build on UK LLC’s desktop mapping of study level metadata across key UK platforms.

Insights from this event will directly inform Population Research UK's strategy to enhance data discovery and reuse.

Event goals

  • To agree on the high-level core functionality of a sustainable “study profile” metadata system, where content is maintained by study teams and supports dynamic sharing.
  • To identify the core metadata fields needed to support discovery by interdisciplinary and general research audiences.
  • To inform the discovery work package commissioning and bid development for Population Research UK.
  • To ensure the system is content-driven and user-informed, with a focus on study visibility and discoverability across metadata platforms.
