A workshop for generating ideas

Drawing from over 20 years of experience making children’s books and comics, and a keen interest in reading about writing, Tor will lead you through fun exercises to help generate ideas and content for stories.

Through improvising, making connections and general play we will try and put aside our ‘critical’ brains and end up in some unexpected places!

During the workshop, we will:

Look at examples and jumping off points
Work through creative exercises together
Discuss influences, keeping lists and ways to keep the practise of finding ideas going in future

We will move through quite a lot of different, short exercises together – the emphasis will be on ideas rather than polished drawings – stick figures will be welcome here!

This workshop is for anyone interested in making sequential art. Although the exercises will lean towards comics, the techniques for generating ideas can be applied to any storytelling medium.

You’ll also get the chance to get independent feedback on your ideas from Tor at the end of the session. We can’t wait to see you there!

You will need whatever materials you usually draw with for this workshop – pencils, pens, paper (printer paper or cartridge is fine), along with scissors and a glue stick.

About Tor Freeman: Tor Freeman is an author and illustrator of comics and picture and chapter books, and has been published in the UK and worldwide during her 20+ year career. She is a regular contributor to magazines including Tralalire, POLLE and The Phoenix.

Her books include the Digby Dog Delivers series, The Toucan Brothers, Ten Fat Sausages by Michelle Robinson and most recently The Book that No One Wanted to Read by Richard Ayoade. She has had two all-ages comics published by Bog Eyed Books, Welcome to Oddleigh and Sister Clawdetta: Murder at the Monastery.
