Section 1:

Testing the effect of historical representations on (African) collective identity and action

History defines a path which helps to construct a group’s purpose, its sense of collective identity, how it relates to other groups, and what its options are for combating present challenges. Therefore, historical representations of collective identity offer a means of influencing the extent to which group members engage in activities in line with the collective interests of their group vs. their own individual interests. Focusing on the African identity, this section of the workshop aims to examine how people’s understanding of their collective history shapes their sense of identity in the present, and the futures that they want to pursue.

Section 2:

What would Martin Luther King do? Class, Race, Gender and a Message to the Academy

It has been 50 years since Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) called for psychologists and other behavioral scientists to "tell it like it is" by illuminating the reality of oppression at the intersection of race, class and nationality. In this seminar I will cover behavioral scientists’ response (or lack of) to MLK’s call, highlighting recent on the importance of knowledge of history for the attenuation of race-based oppression and work at the intersection of race, class, and gender. Finally, I will ask what MLK’s call to the academy might look like today, focusing on “the responsibility of intellectuals” to help generate an understanding of human affairs that ideology and bias helps to obscure
