In Studios of Raeburn

Step back in time and immerse yourself in the artistry of one of Scotland’s most celebrated portrait painters, Sir Henry Raeburn. This six-day experience, five days in the studio plus a special one-day field trip, invites you to refine your skills by studying and copying Raeburn’s masterful works under the guidance of the Edinburgh Atelier of Fine Art’s expert tutors.

Over the course of the workshop, you’ll explore Raeburn’s distinctive approach to brushwork, composition, and light, discovering how he captured the spirit and presence of his sitters with such elegance. Through hands-on demonstrations, one-to-one feedback, and focused studio time, you’ll develop your own painting with the depth and vitality characteristic of the Scottish master’s portraits.

Our inspiring field trip will take you to see original Raeburn works in person. This offers a rare opportunity to observe the subtlety of his palette and the energy of his paint handling, insights that will enrich your studio practice.

Suitable for artists of all levels, this workshop is designed to challenge and motivate you, helping you build confidence, refine technique, and connect with the enduring traditions of portrait painting.

Do I need to be an experienced artist to join?

Not at all. This workshop is suitable for all levels, from enthusiastic beginners to more experienced painters. Our tutors will tailor their guidance to your individual needs and experience.

What materials will I need to bring?

All essential materials will be provided for you. If you have favourite brushes or tools you enjoy working with, feel free to bring them along

How many students will be in the workshop?

We keep our class sizes small to ensure plenty of individual attention. This allows for in-depth feedback and a friendly, supportive atmosphere.

Is lunch provided?

Lunch is not included, but we have a comfortable space for you to bring your own, and there are excellent cafés nearby. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available throughout the day.

How do I book my place?

The workshop costs £750, and that includes all your materials — so you can simply turn up and start painting.
