This workshop will introduce you to clay plastering as a construction technique. By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained both technical knowledge and hands on practical experience including the following:
- An understanding of clay and aggregates as a natural resource
- The ecological and climate credentials of clay
- The difference between key coat, body coat and finish coats
- The different tools needed for mixing and applying clay plaster
- Practical skills for mixing clay plaster using raw materials
- Practical skills for applying a first clay plaster coat onto straw
- Practical skills for plastering with clay plaster
The clay plastering workshop will take place in North Acton Square. Participants will be contributing towards the internal plastering of the North Acton Village Hut - a building using straw and timber, designed and delivered by ReCollective and Social Designs.
Part of the session will include the application of clay plaster onto strawbales. We hope that by participating in the production of a live build, you’ll get an experience of what it’s like to
use natural materials on a building site.
