Event description

Description

How does femininity shape art? How do artists convey femininity? Join us in this workshop to explore how contemporary artists play with femininity and challenge society’s understanding of gender.

Moreover, we will ask: how do we, regardless of gender, negotiate femininity into our lives?

Through the work of American writer and performance artist Alok Vaid-Menon, we explore how we understand femininity and what happens when that idea is challenged.

Looking into the media coverage of the US female football team, we consider how their images negotiate femininity. What reactions occur when the image of women does not conform to the ‘femininity’ that society demands of them?

This workshop is part of the exhibition Mary Doesn't Just Wear Blue, at the York Explore Library.
