Event description

Description

Young musicians have the chance to write songs and discuss mental health issues with one of the UK’s most exciting performers at Suffolk Festival of Ideas.

The free workshop, which has been made possible following support by St Edmundsbury Mayor Julia Wakelam, will take place at 5.30pm at the Hunter Club in Bury St Edmunds on Saturday October 8.

Those taking place in the workshop also have a chance to be part of Brigitte’s performance at the same venue later that night and all participants will also be given two free tickets to give to their friends.

Brigitte Aphrodite is a punk poet, musician, theatre maker and feminist showgirl. With her band she has played Leeds and Reading Festivals, Bestival, Latitude, Kendal Calling and supported Kate Nash and Josie Long on their UK tours.

Brigitte’s debut studio album is due for release in the new year to coincide with her self-penned musical My Beautiful Black Dog – an exploration of the beauteous complexity of our fragile minds, soaked in a tidal wave of glitter.

A proud mentor for the youth charity, Arts Emergency. She has facilitated workshops for Ideastap, the National Youth Theatre, the Eggtooth Project, Brigitte’s music challenges the stigma around mental health and encourages the audience to take ownership of their own black dogs.

Matt Gaw, one of the directors of Suffolk Festival of Ideas, said: “This year the whole festival is themed around stories and we know that for some people, their personal narratives can be challenging and dark.

“The chance to commission Brigitte was a chance to really explode the stigma surrounding mental health and help people – especially young people – tell their stories in a creative and positive way. We are immensely grateful to Julia Wakelam who has funded the workshop with a donation from her locality budget for supporting this vision.”

Julia Wakelam, Mayor of St Edmundsbury, said: “

There are a range of other free workshops taking place across the Suffolk Festival of Ideas weekend, supported by Arts Council England.
