What are the key challenges when staging a play in a new context? Does hygge really translate into English? And how do you solve a problem like Helmer?

Join Foreign Affairs theatre company for a practical workshop exploring the company’s collaborative approach to working with theatre in translation, and the role of the translator in the creative process.

Working almost exclusively with translation, Foreign Affairs has presented new English translations by a number of Nordic playwrights, including Famine by Marie Kajava (Finland), To Damascus by August Strindberg (Sweden) and Helmer Hardcore – A Doll’s House 2 by Jakob Weis (Denmark). During the workshop, we’ll share examples from these productions and invite participants to take part in a series of fun, creative and engaging exercises.

The workshop is open to performers, directors and theatre-makers (which includes translators, of course!) who are interested in innovative, collaborative approaches to working with translated text and subsequently bringing them onto the stage.

The workshop will be co-facilitated by Trine Garrett and William Gregory.
