Workshop: 'Woven Code' with Shannon Swinburn

Workshop: 'Woven Code' with Shannon Swinburn

By Sarabande Foundation

Overview

Join artist Shannon Swinburn to explore the powerful relationship between textiles and the development of code and computing.

DOORS OPEN - 18:00 | WORKSHOP STARTS - 18:30

Led by artist Shannon Swinburn, this workshop will explore how textiles have long acted as carriers of encoded information and how binary systems underpin both weaving structures and computer logic.

In this session, we will explore this connection, including the history of the Jacquard loom and the work of Ada Lovelace. We’ll consider how textile logic helped shape the digital world, rooting this exploration in Tottenham’s own history, we’ll look at the craftswomen who once lived and worked locally, Connecting with the Tottenham Women’s History Map, a community resource that uncovers hidden histories of women’s labour, creativity and resistance.

Participants will create their own woven messages, using binary code as a design tool and situating their own woven messages within Tottenham’s long lineage of women who shaped both fabric and technology.
